I first started writing about ‘anti-gender’ movements and trans-exclusionary feminism more than a decade ago. These movements had nothing like their current power and reach, but all the seeds were there (and many of us were raising the alarm). Now, there is a large, vibrant and growing field of research on ‘anti-gender’ movements.
My 2020 book Me, Not You focused on the dynamics (political and affective) of mainstream white feminism, and argued that these could easily turn reactionary. Chapter Six covered anti-trans and anti-sex work branches of feminism and their ideological and material allegiances with ‘anti-gender’ and far-right movements.
This chapter has now been made open-access. Things are moving so quickly it may feel archival at this point – but hopefully, it is a useful entry in the archive. It can be downloaded at https://phipps.space/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/phipps-feminists-far-right.pdf and do feel free to pass on.
